Using the library catalog to look for a book and the frustration of not finding the index card you were looking for.

A catalog card is an individual entry in a library catalog containing bibliographic information, including author’s name, book title, and even approximate location (on bookshelf).

Here’s an example of a catalog card, which would be filed alphabetically in the Author section:

80s Barbies

These were the Barbies my friends and I owned. Pretty much all the girls would own a Barbie. I tend to like to chop off my Barbie’s hair. When I went to FAO Swartz, there was a whole section displaying Barbies.

Barbie is a fashion doll manufactured by the American toy-company Mattel, Inc. and launched in March 1959. American businesswoman Ruth Handler is credited with the creation of the doll using a German doll called Bild Lilli as her inspiration.

Barbie is the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories, including other family members and collectible dolls. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for over fifty years, and has been the subject of numerous controversies and lawsuits, often involving parodies of the doll and her lifestyle.

Mattel has sold over a billion Barbie dolls, making it the company’s largest and most profitable line. However, sales have declined sharply since 2014.

candy cigarettes

Not quite the best idea to eat them since it mimics you smoking. The candy tasted like eating chalk.

According to Wikipedia:

Candy cigarettes are a candy introduced in the early 20th century made out of chalky sugar, bubblegum or chocolate, wrapped in paper as to resemble cigarettes. Some products contain powdered sugar hidden in the wrapper, allowing the user to blow on the cigarette and produce “smoke” on the other end. Candy cigarettes’ place on the market has long been controversial because many critics believe the candy desensitizes children, leading them to become smokers later in life.

Aeroplane Chess (飛行棋)

飞行棋棋盘

The best game chess ever. Never get old no matter how old you are.

Two to four players each try to get all their own plane pieces from their hangars, located at the corners of the board, into the base of their own color in the center of the board. Each player takes a turn by rolling the dice.

Aeroplane Chess is a Chinese cross-and-circle board game similar to the western game of Ludo and the Indian game of Pachisi.

McDonald’s used Styrofoam for their sandwiches

McDonald’s was so popular. These days people are more concern with health awareness.

In 1990, McDonald’s phased out the foam containers and replaced them with paper packaging considered less harmful to the environment. The move was the first result of an unusual joint effort between the fast-food chain and the Environmental Defense Fund, a leading group of lawyers, scientists and economists based in Washington, D.C. TVB (電視廣播有限公司)

TVB (Television Broadcasts Limited, commonly known as TVB (無綫), was founded as the first wireless commercial television station in Hong Kong) reached out to the Overseas Chinese communities as early as in the 80s. Boston was one of the lucky city to had access to their shows/dramas. Before my parents immigrated to the States, they had watched TVB drama series. So for them to able to watch dramas from here feels like home. We had basic American channels but we only watched for weather.  Still to this day, my parents are still watching TVB even though they have more choices with streaming.

Thanks to TVB, that is how I got my fluent Cantonese from. I had received a lot of compliments of my perfect accent. To any people who wants to learn Cantonese, just watch TVB dramas.

Old Master Q 老夫子

My first comic book was reading Old Master Q. You might wonder why I would be interested reading some middle age men comic book. The comic is actually really hilarious and simple yet with no dialogue. Easy for a kid to read. Few comic strips will have dialogue but you get what it means. Growing up in the States, I never learn to read or write Chinese.

Super Mario Bros

Everyone should at least know who is Super Mario. I have a younger brother, our Dad bought us the first game console since seeing us playing at the department store without leaving. It is very funny when you see how we first played. We moved our controller along with Mario running. Not use to the idea that we were controlling him running.

Rainbow Brite

I never watch Rainbow Brite (1984) since I was really young. Somehow I saw a pic of me having a Rainbow Brite doll sitting on my miniature shopping cart.

According to Wikipedia:

Rainbow Brite is a media franchise by Hallmark Cards, introduced in 1983. The animated television series of the same name first aired in 1984, the same year Hallmark licensed Rainbow Brite to Mattel for a range of dolls and other merchandise.
